Journies through Slovakia & Hungary

9 Oct

Greetings from Slovakia, I mean Hungary, wait no Slovakia! We’re in a town called Komarno which is divided by the Danube river with it’s other side in Hungary called Komarom; both countries connected by the “friendship bridge.”

We left Vienna in the rain. It was our first day cycling in wet weather and of course it was pouring as we attempted to leave the city and find the bike path. The day got better as we carried on and were actually able to make it to Bratislava in one day; it was our biggest day of cycling, a totall of 67 km.

Along the way we ran into two cycle tourists from Germany; Daniel and Uli and shared the dreary road eith them where we joined forces and stayed in the same hostel and went out to a nice Slovakian dinner. WE EVEN Shared a thrilling experience on the bridge into the city (thats a surprise for later!)

We left them in Bratislava and continued onto Gyor, Hungary. We had flat paved cycle paths and were able to do a 70km push. In gyor we ended up camping in someones backyard that they’ve made into a tourists tenting site. It’s starting to get really cold at night and we’re donning most of our layers when sleeping outside; also i am still without a mat, a problem which i hope to remedy in Budapest.

So, we’ve been following the bike paths in Hungary and here we are in a pension on the Slovakian side. Tomorrow we ride as far as we can as budapest is over 100km away and we hope to be there on the 11th.

Hopefully we can update again soon with more pictures to follow.

-all our love, Abby & Dave
