Help us bring our bikes home.

11 Jan

As some of you might know, our trusty steads sit prepared in boxes in Madrid at our dear friend Silvia’s apartment. We are thankful for the storage but ultimately they need to be moved by the end of February.

We have thought about their shipments from all angles. One option is too have brought them with us to India and carry them to Australia. The burden of such an act was impossible knowing what we know now about India.

Option two is to have them shipped to either the US or Australia but this is so cost prohibitive that it would make more sense to buy new bikes upon arrival.

The most practical and economical option is to have them shipped to our place of origin Strani, Cz. Republic and keep them with my grandparents until such a time that we can return to start another adventure or bring them back ourselves.

This last option is a little crazy but we thought we would throw it out there to you, our dear friends and family. We are considering arranging for one of our friends to fly out to Madrid and act as courier on our behalf, stay with our friend and return to Boston (or Madrid). Which of course we would pay for. Sounds like a fun, right?

Now if we can find a willing candidate, and buy the tickets it would still be cheaper than option two but a little more expensive than shipping them to my village. So the reason I write this post is our first and so far only attempt at raising some funds for the endeavor and I wanted to use this post a litmus test in order to see if any of you hard working folks were willing to pitch a little money for our cause. So I have your ear and you might be interested in a little mini vacation to Madrid with travel and accommodation included or are willing to donate a little money please leave a comment and we can take it from there.

Otherwise, we hope everyone is embracing the new year. Missing you all, over and out.

Sincerely,
Dave and Abby

Dave, I just checked the shipping costs from CZ to Australia, and the price seems to be quite good, approx. 80 bucks for a parcel of 20kg…Am thinking about sending the bike to OZ later this year…The service is called “economic parcel” and it takes up one month to get it in OZ…
See you soon! Am elaving in 5 days…

We are limited not by wieght, anything over 2m squared raises the price exponentially.

Dave and Abby! I would do it. Do you need the bikes taken back to Boston? I could take a train from there down to VA and get my own flight back to SF.

What an annoying situation, what a cool sounding mission…

I would happily cycle one of the bikes from Madrid to Czech. There are cheapish flights from Britain to and from both. I’ll be back in Britain January 20th. Although I’m confused, do you need to get them back to Czech USA or Australia?

Another option would be for you guys to fly back to Madrid and have an awesome cycle on them all the way home…

The plan at the moment would be to fly them as luggage to Boston. But I like the option of having my surly biked to my village. I’ll keep it as a plan b, thanks for considering the ride, is cycling to eastern Europe in Feb. Wise,
